Congratulations to all those Athletes who competed with such distinction at recent World Masters T & F Champs in Daegu, South Korea. As a result of medals won, Team Ireland finished a highly creditable 23rd overall in the medals table & 10th European Nation. A very successful haul by the Team. Busy past few days with the opening of World Masters T & F Champs in Daegu, South Korea over the weekend. Previous IMAA President Sean McMullin M80 of Mullingar Hrs had the distinction of winning Team Irelands first medal on opening day, capturing gold in the 10km race walk. This was followed shortly afterwards by Stephen Hunter M45 winning bronze in the 3000m steeplechase. A busy past few days, with M80 team of Tom Durcan, Dick Mullins, Michael Kiely & John Mac Dermott setting a World Masters 4 x 800m relay record (subject to ratification) with a time of 13:48, taking over 13 seconds of previous time set by a German team back in 2013 at Dublin Graded meeting in Santry on Wed 5th Aug. A Men’s M60 Team of Michael Cornyn, Francis Fleming, Diarmuid Doyle & Michael Counsel also set an Irish 4 x 800m record. Next up was the AAI Masters T & F Champ

Ernie Caffrey - An Appreciation
Saddened to hear of the death of Ernie Caffrey, Ballina A.C. who passed away peacefully over the weekend, surrounded by his family. Ernie competed over several disciplines & won many titles, competing both at National & International level (including winning a Silver Medal at M80 Long-Jump at World Masters in Perth in 2016). Congratulations to all master’s teams who competed at 123.ie AAI Relay Champs once again hosted by Raheny Shamrocks last Sunday. In the opening race of the day. F35 & F50 Teams, just a small total of 11 clubs faced the starter. The format was 1 mile leg, followed by 2 miles & 1 mile to finish. European Masters Indoor Champs drew to a close on Thursday, with Team Ireland finishing an incredible 7th overall in the medals table shooting from 10th over the final 2 days. Several Master Athletes participated in the 123.ie AAI National Senior Indoor Champs in Abbottstown last weekend. A special mention to Anne Gilshinan of Slaney Olympic who smashed her previous WR in the 1500m & becomes the first F60 to crack the 5minute barrier Indoors, stopping the clock at 4.58:80.
