Amazing Athletics in Athlone

Congratulations to all Master Athletes who competed at 123.ie AAI Masters Champs in Athlone, Sat 13th Jan 2024. Despite the earlier date this year, it still lead to a packed days competition, with many records set again, which will keep Records Officer, Ronan Gately busy over the coming days as he pursues the results. Records will be updated on the site, once all checked. Some exciting races, plus also some very close competition on the infield. Full results available viawww.athleticsireland.ie

However the highlight of the day saw Shane Healy, M55 of MSB, smash the World Record over 800m by over 3 secs, stopping the clock @2.02.46. This just comes 8 days after Shane set a 3000m Indoor World Record in Abbottstown the prev Sat, with a fantastic time of 8.47.74, breaking a 44 year old Indoor record plus also surpasses the Outdoor record. Both times are subject to ratification. Shane will now be setting his sights on the Indoor 1500m plus mile, over the coming weeks.

We would also like to thank all the Officials & Volunteers who oversaw the day’s events. Many of those were also putting in a double shift on Sunday, as they Officiated at National League. Hopefully Athletes appreciate their commitment in ensuring that all runs smoothly on the day.

We would also like to draw to your attention to next coaching day, supported by the IMAA, which will take place in Nenagh Indoor Stadium on Sun 11th Feb from 10am to 2pm. We would also like to thank all those coaches who have offered to help out on the day. This will be the 4th one held over the past few months & reports from previous ones have been very positive & beneficial to all those who attended. See further details below.

Looking slightly further ahead, Lucy Moore has once again offered to host an informative talk & presentation on Anti-doping. This is of vital importance to all Athletes who are competing, either here at home or abroad. Many may not realize the consequences of taking prescribed medication or over the counter supplements, without checking them out, so we strongly recommend as many as possible to please attend online. We will publish the date, once Lucy can confirm her availability. Testers from Sport Ireland were in attendance in Athlone on Sunday, so we are not immune to been tested here at home.

President IMAA
