20 Records fall at National Masters Indoors in Athlone on 13/01/2024

A total of 449 Masters athletes from the 4 corners of Ireland descended on Athlone last Saturday 13th Jan for the National Indoor Masters.

The athletes ranged in age from 35 to 90+ (the evergreen Pat Naughton from Nenagh Olympic).

The star of the show was Shane Healy (Metro St. Brigid & Dublin Track Club who under coach Feidhlim Kelly, smashed the M55 800m World Record clocking 2.02.46 (knocking 3.58 seconds off the existing record). This was on the back of also setting a new M55 World Record in the 3000m of 8.47.71 in Abbotstown just 1 week previously.

Mary Barrett (Loughrea AC) set 2 new W65 records in Shot Put and 60m Hurdles and also equalled the existing record for the High-Jump.

Both Carlton Haddock M50 (Leevale) and Shane Sheridan M65 (DSD) each set 2 new Irish Record - Carlton in the 200m (in 23.90 secs - the fastest time across all athletes on the day) and 400m (in 53.60 secs) and Shane in the 60m (8.27 secs) and 200m (in 27.67 secs).

Michelle O'Mahony M60 (Kilmurry Ibrickane North Clare) also set 2 new records in the 1,500m and 3000m in 5.33.84 and 11.35 respectively.

Sinead McConnell W55 (Finn Valley) set yet another Walks record in the 3000m in 16.56.66 (she now hold W45, W50 and W55 records at this disctance).

Michelle During (City of Derry Spartans) set a new W35 Triple-Jump mark of 10.69m.

Martin McEvilly (Galway City Harriers) smashed the M75 3000m record by 50 seconds running 13.03.95.

Ger Cremin (An Riocht) just dipped under the existing M45 60m Hurdles record clocking 9.09 secs.

Michael McCarthy Snr (Metro St. Brigids) set an excellent new mark in the M35 Triple-Jump of 12.07m.

There were 2 new records in the Pole Vault set by Alan Burke (Leevale) M55 in 3.40m and Jim O'Connor M60 (Limerick) of 2.60m. Great to see older athletes attempting this and other events (Triple-Jump; Hurdles) which have been opened up to the older age categories in recent years.

William Hunt-Tyrell M50 (Croghan AC) possibly better known as a talented golfer, set an excellent new record in the Shot-Put of 13.16m.

John Dwyer M40 (Templemore) who does so much good work for the Throwing community, set a new Weight for Distance record of 7.04m.

Olga Nedvede (Dooneen) set a new record of 7.32m in Weight for Distance.

Christina Smith (Moy Valley) W80 set a new record in the Shot-Put of 4.03m.
