The European Masters Athletics Championships 2019 were held in Jessolo, Italy from 5th – 15th September.

The Irish Team performed exceptionally strongly yet again, claiming a total of 32 medals (12 Gold, 12 Silver and 8 Bronze). This resulted in Team Ireland finishing 14th out of 59 countries (only 35 countries medalled) – a superb performance relative to our population size.

Special mention must go Annette Kealy who won double Gold in W50 in 5k and 10k. Annette also won Bronze as part of the Irish W40 4km Cross Country Team. Also to the amazing Anne Woodlock who won Gold in W80 5k and Silver in 1,500m. Maurice McMahon achieved a similar feat winning Gold in M45 4 km Cross Country and Silver in 5km and he was also a key member of Irish Team that won Bronze in M45 4km Cross Country.

Also particular credit to both Brian Lynch and Joe Gough both of whom took double Gold in the M65 category (Brian in 4km Cross County and in 5km and Joe in 800m and 1,500m), Brian also won silver in the 1,500 (behind Joe for an Irish 1, 2) and was part of the Irish M65 Team that won silver in the 4km Cross County.

Annette Quaid won Silver in the W40 category in both the 800m (behind Denise Toner who won Gold for another Irish 1, 2) and 400m.

Also noteworthy is that there were 10 Team Medals won by Irish Teams across 10k and 20k Race-walks; 4k Cross Country; Half-marathon, 4x100 and 4x400m. Full credit to all athletes involved in these teams and to Team Managers: Anne Gormley; Ian Egan and Sean McDermott and to relay team managers Patrick Crossan; Carol Kearney and Ger Cremin. Ni neart go cur le cheile!
